Five Years Ago

This week in 2020, AT&T was hypocritically calling for Section 230 reform and astroturfing the FCC in support of Trump’s attack on social media, while we submitted FCC comments both from Mike and from the Copia Institute on the NTIA petition calling for 230 to be reinterpreted. We also wrote about how the Supreme Court told federal agencies to stop trying to rewrite 230, and featured a Techdirt Greenhouse guest post about why 230 is essential to fighting hate speech online.

Ten Years Ago

This week in 2015, Sony Pictures was contradicting itself in describing the harms of the infamous hack it was hit with, the cable industry was fighting to prevent set top box competition, and movie studios were absolutely freaking out about Popcorn Time. Meanwhile, Canadian police chiefs were complaining about the warrant requirement for ISP subscriber data, Vice News employees were charged with terrorism in Turkey for using encryption, and India was going after Google with antitrust charges.

Fifteen Years Ago

This week in 2010, we wondered why only a few ISPs were fighting back against subpoenas from US Copyright Group, which were evolving to come with new language and higher demands, while we were pleased to see some French ISPs pushing back against Hadopi and threatening to ignore requests. The US Commerce Secretary took the side of the RIAA and said ISPs need to start policing copyright, record labels were mad about the Indian copyright board lowering radio royalties, and music publishers were angry that Apple didn’t grovel to them before launching 60-second song previews on iTunes.
