Dyson’s new smart fan heater looks so cosy, I’m almost excited for the cold weather to arrive

  • Dyson Hot + Cool HF1 is a new fan heater with companion app
  • Equipped with a temperature sensor for energy-efficient heating
  • Can heat a room by 1C in as little as 100 seconds

Pack away those sandals. Empty your ice cube trays. Summer is over, winter is here. Or, at least, it will be soon. Relatively. Thankfully, Dyson has a new gadget to help take the edge off and keep the chill out.

The Dyson Hot + Cool HF1 is a fan heater that promises quiet, fast, energy-efficient warming, and it sounds like my perfect cold-weather companion. In fact, it’ll also earn its keep in the summer, because it can operate as a fan – but in these vaguely chilly early autumn days, it’s the heating properties that I’m most interested in.

This is Dyson’s first connected fan heater, which means you can control the setting via a companion app, as well as on the machine itself. That all-important upgrade means you can switch on the heater via your app while you’re on your way home, and return to a toasty house.

I’m also pleased to see Dyson has included a thermostat. Running a heater can often be expensive, but here you can set a target temperature and the HF1 will only do what it needs to to maintain it, rather than wasting energy by making your room hotter and hotter until you finally notice you’ve reached sub-tropical temperatures.

There’s a timer, which is useful if you want to use the HF1 at the start of the night to keep you cosy while you drop off. On which note, Dyson has thoughtfully added a Sleep mode, where the display dims and the fan heater operates especially quietly.

The HF1 can operate like a fan or a heater, but it doesn’t look like the traditional versions of either of those things. The minimal, bladeless design uses Air Multiplier technology to gather air from the surrounding area into the stream that’s being blaster out of the ‘hoop’, helping to heat or cool the room more quickly.

It can apparently raise the temperature in a room by one degree (Celsius) in under two minutes, and you can warm a space up to 32C. There’s oscillation up to 70-degrees and the option to manually tilt if you want more direct warming.

The absence of grilles and blades also mean a safer appliance, but further pains have been made to ensure the HF1 is suitable for homes with children and pets. There are no visible heating elements and all the surfaces maintain low surface temperatures, plus it’ll automatically cut out if it’s tipped over. Oh, and there’s a safety lock on the control panel, too.

The Dyson Hot+Cool HF1 is due to go on sale in the UK in October, at a list price of £399.99. I don’t have pricing or launch date info for the US or Australia, but based on UK pricing it might be around $550 / AU$800.
