Microsoft has finally fixed some annoying bugs in Windows 11 that have been hanging around for a very long time – but the downside is that a fresh flaw has just popped up in the desktop OS.
Let’s start with the good news, which is that Bleeping Computer spotted is that Microsoft has squashed two bothersome bugs. One of those relates to cameras, and it actually dates back to October 2024, meaning that affected PCs have been blocked from getting the 24H2 update since then.
This was a problem with webcams that use face-detection features, which includes login via facial recognition with Windows Hello. Microsoft has just resolved the bug, which means that affected Windows 11 PCs with these cameras can now download the 24H2 update.
Microsoft has also fixed a longstanding bug which completely broke Bluetooth audio for some Windows 11 users – that one dated back to the end of last year, too. Again, that was a problem with version 24H2, and those affected can only just now install that update.
The niggle here, though, is that Ghacks noticed Microsoft’s confirmation of a new bug in Windows 11 whereby Blu-ray and DVD apps (as well as Digital TV software) might fail to play protected content (with DRM).
This flaw was introduced in the September update for Windows 11 (and the preview of that update which arrived in late August).
Microsoft explains that this gremlin has hit apps which use the Enhanced Video Renderer, and those affected may see playback fail with an error message or black screen, or they might experience “frequent playback interruptions” which sounds less than ideal.
The software giant says it’s working on providing a fix, which will be piped through in a future Windows 11 update.
Analysis: fixes for upgrade to 24H2 only just slide in before the arrival of 25H2
Hopefully the fix for the problem with playing DVDs or Blu-rays in Windows 11 won’t take Microsoft a year to sort out. To be fair, such delays aren’t normally the case, but it’s taken way too long to fix both the webcam and Bluetooth bugs that have prevented folks from getting the 24H2 update.
Indeed, those people who are only just being given access to version 24H2 are barely getting the chance to grab it before the 25H2 update arrives (which is likely imminent – it might even turn up next week).
The 25H2 update is an unexciting affair, with the highlight being a rejig of the Start menu which is admittedly good work, but which is also coming to those who remain on 24H2; indeed, in some cases, those user may get it before users on 25H2, depending on how the rollout dice fall.
