Google Mixboard: AI-Powered Visual Brainstorming Tool Takes On Pinterest

Google has introduced Mixboard, an experimental tool available through Google Labs, aimed at enhancing visual brainstorming and moodboard creation with the help of artificial intelligence. Currently in public beta and limited to users in the United States, the platform functions just like Pinterest, as a digital canvas for exploring and organizing design-related ideas.

Mixboard is powered by Gemini 2.5 Flash, Google’s AI model, which enables users to build boards starting from ready-made templates or by issuing simple text prompts. For example, users can type instructions such as “show me Memphis-style cups and plates” or “set up an autumn-themed party in my living room” to generate relevant images. In addition, users may upload their own photos, mixing them with AI-generated visuals to shape unique boards. The tool is positioned as a creative assistant for diverse scenarios, from planning home interiors to organizing social events, drawing a parallel with Pinterest’s popular inspiration boards.

What sets Mixboard apart is its strong reliance on AI for interactivity and customization. Users can refine their moodboards using natural language commands to adjust layouts, combine images, or request stylistically consistent graphics based on a reference photo. The platform also offers one-click options for regenerating visuals or producing alternative designs quickly, giving creators multiple variations to explore.

While the concept of digital whiteboards for idea generation is not new—platforms such as Adobe’s Firefly Boards and Figma’s FigJam already provide similar collaborative canvases—Google’s entry into this space is notable for its deep integration with generative AI. This positions Mixboard as not merely a static repository of images, but as a dynamic tool capable of responding interactively to user input and evolving along with the creative process.

For now, the service remains exclusive to U.S. users, though the official website is accessible globally for those interested in following its progress. The launch signals Google’s broader strategy to embed AI across creative and productivity applications, directly targeting markets where tools like Pinterest and design platforms have long been dominant.
