Why Apple’s AirPods 4 rule the school

In our AirPods 4 review our main issue was the price: at $129 we felt they were too expensive compared to rivals. But under $85? That’s a whole different story, because these are a big improvement over the previous generation.

As ever with AirPods, you’ll get the best from them if you’re on-board with the Apple ecosystem: their best features are exclusive to Apple tech. As we said in our review, that delivers a great experience: “The head-tracked spatial audio is so impressive with movies, the auto-device switching between Apple tech is really useful, and it’s generally a seamless experience.”

We really like the automatic switching between different Apple devices, because we’re constantly moving from Mac to iPad to iPhone and, as the ad slogan puts it, it just works.

The sound is very good for this type of fit – AirPods, unlike their Pro siblings, sit outside your ear canal rather than in it, which gives you better awareness of the world around you but loses a bit of bass. AirPods 4 still feel full and impactful, though.

And the head tracking spatial audio is really good in TV shows and movies, delivering a real home theater effect without making you unpopular with your neighbors.

As you’d expect, there’s Siri support and Find My too, and the new gesture controls enable you to confirm things like “do you want to record an outdoor walk” with a nod or reject calls with a shake of the head. And the mic quality is good for making voice and video calls.
