Yahoo! The Super Mario Galaxy Movie (TSMGM), the next animated film venture from Nintendo and Illumination, isn’t too far away now. Indeed, with the movie due out on April 3, 2026, we’re less than four months out from seeing Nintendo’s legendary mascot warp-pipe his way back onto the big screen.

Before Mario and company take to the stars in the forthcoming flick, you’ll want the lowdown on what to expect. In this guide, I’ve rounded up everything we know so far about TSMGM, including its confirmed launch date, first trailer, cast list, and plot details. So, throw on your plumber-based cosplay and let’s-a-go!

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie release date

As I mentioned up top, TSMGM will invite fans old and new to join the titular moustachioed hero on a cosmic adventure like no other on April 3, 2026.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie‘s release date was confirmed in September. With Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri recently revealing the film will be fully finished before the end of 2025, it’s on track to meet that launch date, too.

Revealed during a Nintendo Direct in November 2025, the film’s first trailer teased plenty about its plot. You can learn more about what was shown in my The Super Mario Galaxy Movie‘s trailer breakdown.

Previously, the only footage made available to the public came during September 2025’s Nintendo Direct, which confirmed the movie’s title and teased the addition of other characters to TSMGM‘s cast. Speaking of which…

Here’s the film’s confirmed cast of characters, plus the actors who’ll voice them:

  • Chris Pratt as Mario
  • Charlie Day as Luigi
  • Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach
  • Jack Black as Bowser
  • Keegan-Michael Key as Toad
  • Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek
  • Brie Larson as Rosalina
  • Benny Safdie as Bowser Jr.

The first six individuals appeared in The Super Mario Bros. Movie (TSMBM), aka the first animated film based on Mario’s enduringly popular video game franchise.

The only absentee from the aforementioned movie’s main cast is Seth Rogen, who voiced Donkey Kong. It’s unclear if Mario’s foe-turned-friend will appear in TSMGM, but with online rumors suggesting DK is in line to star in his own animated spin-off, he may not feature here.

Three other characters will also show up in TSMBM‘s sequel.

We know Yoshi is set to feature, with The Super Mario Bros. Movie‘s mid-credits scene practically confirming that he’ll be part of the proceedings. Yoshi wasn’t in TSMGM’s first teaser, but a recent movie tie-in product leak, one for Pillsbury cookies of all things (per IGN), has given us our first look at Yoshi’s cinematic design, too.

Two individuals who were confirmed in the first trailer are Rosalina and Bowser Jr.

The former, who made her video game debut in 2007 platformer Super Mario Galaxy, will be voiced by Nintendo superfan Brie Larson (Captain Marvel, Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World). Meanwhile, Bowser’s son will be portrayed by actor-director Benny Safdie (Uncut Gems, The Smashing Machine).

Given TSMGM will be heavily inspired by the story told in the aforementioned Wii game and Super Mario Galaxy 2, aka its Wii U sequel, it’s no great surprise that this duo is part of the movie’s plot. As for what its story will entail…

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie story speculation

Potential spoilers follow for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.

Nintendo hasn’t released a story synopsis for TSMGM yet. Thanks to its trailer and what happened in its predecessor, though, there’s a fair amount we can glean about its plot.

As its first teaser, well, teases, the Super Mario Galaxy games aren’t the only ones that have influenced its narrative. Various trailer shots include major references to Super Mario Sunshine, Super Mario Odyssey, Super Mario Bros. Wonder, and Paper Mario. So, the legendary Nintendo mascot’s full catalog of titles has clearly inspired this flick’s story and its wider universe.

It appears Bowser Jr. will be the primary villain – or, at the very least, on co-antagonist duties – too. The trailer reveals he’ll attempt to rescue his dad, who was miniaturized and imprisoned during TSMBM‘s climax, from Princess Peach’s Castle.

To what end, we don’t yet know, but the smart money is on the father-son duo teaming up to steal more Power Stars – and that’s where Rosalina might fit into the picture.

You see, Rosalina is the protector-in-chief of the Luma, star-like creatures that first appeared in Super Mario Galaxy and some of whom can transform into Power Stars. Considering Bowser acquired a Power Star and threatened to use it to destroy the Mushroom Kingdom if Peach didn’t agree to marry him, the prospect of more Power Stars falling into Bowser and his son’s hands is a frightening one for everyone else.

Powerful though Rosalina is, she likely won’t be alone in defending the Luma. Peach and Toad, who’ll use a Star Portal to travel across the cosmos in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, should ally themselves with a character Peach has long been rumored to have a connection to. Well, as long as they aren’t overwhelmed by the horde of Ninji that attack them in the trailer and film.

Mario and Luigi, who are seen traveling to what appears to be Odyssey‘s Sand Kingdom in the teaser, are also expected to join the fight against Bowser, his offspring, and their minions after siding with Peach in The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Yoshi should join them, too, if and when the brothers come across the iconic, long-tongued dinosaur on their latest adventure.

Hopefully, an actual story synopsis (and another trailer!) will be released online before TSMGM arrives in theaters, which should give us even more information and/or clues on what to expect from Nintendo and Universal’s budding cinematic universe.

Where can I watch The Super Mario Bros. Movie?

Peach and Toad are going in search of a streaming platform that houses The Super Mario Bros. Movie (Image credit: Nintendo/Illumination)

Unfortunately, The Super Mario Bros. Movie doesn’t appear in any of the world’s best streaming services’ back catalogs.

You can rent or buy it from various premium video on-demand (PVOD) platforms, including the Amazon store, Apple TV, and YouTube. If you were hoping to stream it for “free” – i.e., on a service you’re already subscribed to – though, you’re out of luck.

Hopefully, this will change in the lead-up to TSMGM‘s release. If it does, its most likely destinations will be Netflix, which has been TSMBM‘s international home, and Peacock TV, aka the streamer owned by NBCUniversal, which is also the studio that distributed the flick in theaters.

Will there be another Mario movie?

If The Super Mario Galaxy Movie makes enough coin, a sequel should follow (Image credit: Nintendo/Illumination)

We don’t know. However, if The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is as financially successful as its billion-dollar-spinning forebear was – and there’s no reason to suspect it won’t be – it’s inevitable that a third animated Mario film will be greenlit.

TSMGM and a potential sequel flick aren’t the only big-screen adaptations that Nintendo Stars, the iconic Japanese company’s recently renamed film and TV division, is working on.

A live-action adaptation of The Legend of Zelda game series is set to arrive in May 2027. Principal photography began this month (November 2025) in New Zealand, with the cameras rolling four months after Nintendo confirmed who’ll play Link and Zelda in the upcoming movie.

As I discussed earlier, an animated Donkey Kong film is also thought to be in early development, but Nintendo hasn’t officially confirmed it yet. As always, stick with TechRadar for news on this front when we have it.
