We’ve reached the end of the year and while many people will be watching the best Christmas movies, I’ve got some recommendations for something a little different.
The best streaming services are once again packed with new horror movies for you to dive into. Whether you’re after a classic or a new release, there’s plenty to choose from throughout December.
Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978)
Watch On
Where: Prime Video (worldwide)
When: December 1
When it comes to sci-fi horror, you can’t get much better than Invasion of the Body Snatchers. The 50s movie is also great, but the 80s remake is my personal favorite and it’s streaming worldwide on Prime Video.
The movie follows a San Francisco health inspector and his colleague who discover that humans are being replaced by alien duplicates that are perfect clones but have no humanity or empathy.
With a fantastic leading cast like Donald Sutherland and Jeff Goldblum, this is a movie I find myself revisiting a lot.
The Ring
Watch On
Where: Paramount+ (worldwide)
When: December 1
The Ring is a classic, and nothing says holiday cheer like a creepy woman crawling out of your TV right? It’s well worth revisiting this movie now it’s streaming on Paramount+.
Gore Verbinski’s much loved (and feared) horror movie sees Naomi Watts as a journalist who discovers a cursed VHS tape that causes its viewers to die seven days later.
You can watch the original 1998 Japanese movie on Shudder, as I highly recommend the original and the remake.
Scary Movie 2
Watch On
Where: Paramount+ (worldwide)
When: December 1
Sometimes you need a silly lighthearted comedy, and Scary Movie 2 is sure to scratch that itch. Despite the fact it bombed critically, it’s a great choice for people who don’t take their horrors too seriously.
As far as parodies go, the Scary Movie franchise is one a lot of us reach for whenever we want to point fun at the most iconic horror movies.
The second in the series pokes fun at movies like The Haunting, Stigmata, The Exorcist, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, The Amityville Horror, and A Nightmare on Elm Street.
Reflection in a Dead Diamond
Watch On
Where: Shudder (worldwide)
When: December 5
The first of Shudder’s exciting new arrivals is Reflection in a Dead Diamond. Available worldwide on the horror streaming service in early December, I’m definitely going to be checking this one out.
The movie follows a man living in a luxury hotel as he becomes intrigued by his next-door neighbor who reminds him of his wildest years as a spy on the Riviera during the 1960s.
Billed as more thriller than horror, it may be the lightest option on the list but still an intriguing entry into Shudder’s library this December.
Influencers
Watch On
Where: Shudder
When: December 12
Influencers is set in picturesque southern France but it’s about to get a lot bleaker, as we follow a dangerous tale of obsession and jealousy.
Here, CW and her new girlfriend Diane are celebrating their first anniversary, but soon find themselves being tormented by an influencer named Charlotte who befriends Diane and won’t leave the couple alone.
It’s a sequel to the 2023 movie Influencer, which is also streaming on Shudder and makes for an excellent double bill.
The Jester 2
Watch On
Where: Shudder (US, UK), rent or buy (AU)
When: December 12
The Jester 2 joins its predecessor on Shudder this month, for those of you brave enough to see the creepy supernatural killer for a second time.
This sequel follows teen magician Max who ends up crossing paths with the sinister Jester on Halloween night (but of course).
After this unfortunate encounter, she must outsmart a supernatural killer whose magic is terrifyingly real. But will Max survive? You’ll have to watch and find out.
Strange Harvest
Watch On
Where: Hulu (US); rent or buy (UK, AU)
When: December 23
If you love found footage and mockumentaries, you won’t want to miss Strange Harvest. With a glowing 92% Rotten Tomatoes rating, it’s been a surprising hit among the critics.
The movie centers around detectives on the trail of a serial killer called Mr. Shiny who, after reappearing from a nearly 20-year absence, starts leaving cryptic clues at crime scenes.
Eerie and disturbing, those of you wanting a mystery to unravel should watch this when it arrives on Hulu in late December.
Together
Watch On
Where: Hulu (US); rent or buy (UK, AU)
When: December 31
Finally, the body horror hit of 2025 will stream on New Year’s Eve. Maybe it’s not the most appropriate movie to ring in the new year with, but it’s very good indeed.
Here, real-life married couple Alison Brie and Dave Franco play a couple at a crossroads when they move to the countryside, abandoning all that is familiar in their lives except for each other.
The movie explores tough subjects like codependency, with some gross visuals and tense scenes, and a little bit of dark humor thrown in too.
