ExpressVPN launches free VPN service to combat the dangers of low-quality freebies

  • The team behind ExpressVPN launched a new free secure VPN software
  • EventVPN is built on premium security features and an ad model with built-in privacy
  • EventVPN comes with both a free and paid version

The team behind ExpressVPN has just released a secure and free VPN software in a bid to deliver premium privacy at no cost.

What TechRadar’s reviewers already rated as one of the best VPNs on the market, ExpressVPN, claimed to have built EventVPN as a direct response to a rise in low-quality free VPN apps.

EventVPN blends premium security features with an innovative privacy-first advertising model, while offering unlimited bandwidth.

“Privacy should be a human right, not just limited to those who can pay for it with money,” says Shay Peretz, Chief Operating Officer at ExpressVPN.

EventVPN is now available to download and use on the Apple App Store and comes with full support for iOS 26 with Liquid Glass compatibility as standard.

Subscribers can opt for either the free version, which includes coverage for one device across servers in 35+ countries, or a paid version that comes with an eight-device allowance and a server network across 125+ locations worldwide.

The problem with free VPNs

As social media bans, censorship, and other internet restrictions rise worldwide, more and more people are turning to virtual private network (VPN) tools to bypass these obstacles and retain access to their favorite apps.

Yet, “Each and every time online privacy is threatened, downloads of unsafe VPNs peak,” said Peretz.

At best, unsecure free VPN apps will monetize your data to generate revenue and stay afloat in the market. This may occur by targeting you with intrusive ads or tracking technologies that can collect details on your online activities and then sell them to data brokers.

At worst, however, dangerous free VPNs pose a serious threat to your data security.

For instance, cybercriminals increasingly use malicious free VPN apps to inject malware and other dangerous software into people’s devices.

Multiple studies have also uncovered how some popular free VPN apps topping both Google and Apple app stores may have undisclosed ties with China or Russia.

EventVPN – all we know

EventVPN is joining a handful of providers already offering a free VPN service, such as Proton VPN and WireGuard, that deliver premium protection.

The service offers some of the best ExpressVPN features. These include a strict no-log VPN policy, kill switch, post-quantum encryption, and RAM-only servers.

That said, the provider claims EventVPN is unique. That’s because, as ExpressVPN explains in its official announcement, “[EventVPN] does not rely on a backend or database to manage users. Instead, it uses Apple account validation and subscription receipts to confirm whether a user has an active subscription.”

Once validated, EventVPN issues an anonymous access and connection token, the provider explains, which allows users to connect with the infrastructure provided by ExpressVPN without directly managing any personal user data.

EventVPN also boasts a privacy-first ad model, which promises that “any advertising stays entirely separate and distinct from the hardware that makes VPN connections possible.”

We contacted ExpressVPN for some clarifications about its ad model and app availability, and we will update the page as we get some responses.
