BYD’s First Solid-State Battery EV Promises Full Charge In Just 12 Minutes

BYD, one of the world’s leading electric vehicle (EV) manufacturers, is intensifying its efforts to stay ahead of competitors such as MG, particularly in response to the rising success of the MG4 and its semi-solid-state battery technology. The Chinese automaker has confirmed plans to introduce its first fully solid-state batteries by 2027, with mass production expected to begin by 2030. The company has been developing this technology for over a decade and now aims to bring it to market in a way that could redefine the future of electric mobility.

Solid-state batteries represent one of the most promising advancements in EV energy storage. Unlike traditional lithium-ion batteries that rely on a liquid electrolyte, solid-state batteries use a solid electrolyte, improving energy density, safety, and thermal stability. This design reduces the risk of fire, prevents leaks, and enables more compact and efficient packaging—key advantages for next-generation electric vehicles.

BYD’s upcoming solid-state batteries are expected to achieve energy densities of up to 400 Wh/kg, a significant leap beyond current technologies. For comparison, the company’s existing LFP (lithium iron phosphate) batteries offer around 160–180 Wh/kg, while even the most advanced NMC (nickel manganese cobalt) batteries typically reach 300 Wh/kg. Reaching 400 Wh/kg would position BYD at the forefront of the global EV innovation race, surpassing the capabilities of most current battery systems.

Equally impressive are the projected range and charging capabilities. Early estimates suggest that EVs powered by BYD’s new solid-state batteries could deliver up to 800 kilometers (nearly 500 miles) of range on a single charge—approximately double the average range of today’s electric cars. Some industry observers even speculate that BYD’s technology could eventually exceed 1,000 kilometers per charge.

Charging speed is another area where BYD’s technology promises to break records. Reports indicate that a full charge could be achieved in just 12 minutes, representing an unprecedented improvement in convenience and usability.

If successful, this breakthrough could dramatically reshape the EV market, reducing “range anxiety” and accelerating global adoption of electric vehicles. The combination of higher energy density, faster charging, and enhanced safety could also make BYD a leading supplier of advanced batteries not only for its own models but potentially for other automakers worldwide.
