Your Google Keep reminders are now moving to Google Tasks – and power users will find this very confusing

  • Google Keep reminders are heading to Google Tasks
  • Google Tasks syncs across multiple Google apps
  • You’ll see the change happen over the next few weeks

Google has been busy moving different parts of its apps around, and having previously announced the change last year, is now putting all Google Keep reminders into Google Tasks – in a move that’s likely to confuse power users of the note-taking app.

As 9to5Google reports, the idea is to make life simpler – with Google Tasks a central hub for all your reminders across Google Keep, Gemini, Gmail, Google Calendar, and Google Docs. But it means Google Keep enthusiasts will now have to jump between apps to remember what it is they’re supposed to be doing.

You’ll still be able to create reminders in Google Keep, by tapping the little bell icon up in the top-right corner of a note. These reminders will also remain visible on the note, with your chosen date and time attached.

However, Google Tasks will now take care of all the notifications, rather than Google Keep – the reminder alert won’t actually come through unless you have Google Tasks or Google Calendar installed or open somewhere. Try and keep up at the back.

What’s more, location reminders for Google Keep are going away as part of the transition: that means you’ll no longer be able to get the app to remind you to pick up milk when you go past the grocery store. You can’t do this in Google Tasks either.

If you delete a task in Google Calendar or Google Tasks, the reminder will disappear from Google Keep, but the note the reminders was attached to will stay. From Google Keep, you can delete the note, the reminder (the task), or both together.

As you can see, it’s not particularly easy to get a handle on, and it’s likely to be a bit of a headache for serious Google Keep users who have a whole load of notes and reminders already set up. These reminders will now be moved across to Google Tasks for everyone, across the next few weeks.

Google Tasks remains a rather barebones experience, after breaking out from Gmail as a standalone experience in 2018. It is at least well embedded in all the key Google apps and services – including, starting now, Google Keep.
