Buying an older version is the best way to save on a Dyson haircare gadget this deals season – and I’m already seeing major discounts

Dyson haircare gadgets are very good, but they’re also very expensive. I manage TechRadar’s best hair styler and best hair dryer guides, and as well as reviewing and writing about styling gadgets as part of my day job, I also keep a close eye on prices.

Black Friday is now on the horizon, and plenty of people will be keeping an eye out for a Dyson haircare bargain. Having reported on this shopping event for several years, I have a good idea of what to expect when it comes to Dyson deals.

While I expect there will be a smattering of new Supersonic and Airwrap discounts cropping up over Black Friday and the surrounding days, for both US and UK shoppers, my hot tip if you really want to save is to consider an older model.

You’ll need to be a bit more savvy to spot one of these deals – they’re not guaranteed, and they might appear on Dyson’s own site or via a third-party retailer. While researching this article, I spotted the Dyson Supersonic Origin is £189 (was £279.99) at Amazon UK, which is the lowest price I have on record for that model.

In the US last month Amazon cut the price of the Airwrap Origin to $399.99 from $529.99 (it’s not available any more, sorry), and on Black Friday 2024 there was a $100 discount on the Supersonic Origin direct from Dyson, taking it down to $329.99.

What models should I look for?

The two models to look out for are the Supersonic Origin and the Airwrap Origin. Sseveral newer generations of both have been released, but the originals are still floating around, even if they’re not part of the official Dyson lineup.

The Supersonic is the hair dryer that propelled Dyson into a position as a serious player in the hair and beauty market. In 2024, it was officially succeeded by the Supersonic Nural. That dryer is packed with tech and seriously impressive – learn more in my Dyson Supersonic Nural review – but it’s also pricey, costing $499.99 / £399.99 / AU$749 at sticker price.

As a reminder, the best deals I’ve spotted on the Origin version take it to $329.99 / £189, which is still an investment, but far more palatable.

The original Airwrap launched in 2018, but there have been several newer versions since then – the Airwrap (2022), the Airwrap i.d. (launched 2024), and 2025’s Airwrap Co-anda 2x. The newest version has an eye-watering ticket price of $749.99 / £579.99 / AU$999. I’ve seen the Origin version for $399.99 in the US.

What are the caveats?

The Origin version of these gadgets aren’t as advanced as the newer iterations. In some cases, the difference might feel worth it for the extra saving, but in others you might want to invest in one of the later-gen options to get the tool you really need.

In the case of the Supersonic, the Origin version is still a superb hair dryer. It’s powerful, and has a streamlined shape that’s easy to wield. The Nural version adds a Scalp protect mode, where the dryer will increase or decrease the heat depending on how close the dryer is to your head, to maintain what feels like a constant temperature on your scalp. It also has attachment memory. Head to my Dyson Supersonic Nural vs Supersonic article for more on the differences between these two options.

The first Airwraps required you to swap over the barrel to change from from clockwise to anticlockwise curls. This was fixed in the 2022 version – check the listing on your Airwrap Origin of choice to see if it can do this or not.

The i.d. version has an i.d.curl switch that launches an automated wrap > curl > cold shot sequence that’s personalized for your hair type. It’s a major effort-saver, but the curling feature itself is basically the same on both versions. Head to my Dyson Airwrap vs Airwrap i.d. explainer for a more in-depth breakdown of the differences.

The 2x version is smaller, lighter and more powerful than the i.d., but has all the same features, as far as I can tell.
