The Paperwhite at a record-low price is my top Black Friday Kindle deal – but there’s another ereader I’d recommend

The last few major sales in Australia hadn’t seen too many good Kindle deals. Black Friday 2025 sales have delivered, though, with some of the best prices on the latest crop of Kindles I’ve seen since they were all announced in 2024.

The best offer is on the standard Kindle Paperwhite, which is now at its best price yet – AU$229 (down from AU$299), which is a 23% discount and beating the Prime Day price by a decent margin. If it’s good value you’re after in a Kindle, this would be my pick. I’ve tested it myself, so trust that this recommendation is based on sound analysis.

I should call out the Kindle Colorsoft, which also gets a 23% discount and is at its lowest Aussie price of AU$309 as well. This is for the standard version with 16GB storage. As much as I love a colour ereader, it’s good value only to those who mostly read comics, magna or graphic novels.

Most of us read text-heavy books, which are going to be in black and white anyway, so I’d definitely drop cash on the Kindle Paperwhite this Black Friday, unless you really want a colour ereader.

Best Black Friday Kindle deals

Depending on your needs and your budget, you can’t go wrong with either of those Kindles at those prices. There is one thing you need to be aware of when using a Kindle in Australia: Amazon has disabled the Bluetooth connectivity feature on all the models, so you can’t use them to listen to audiobooks sadly.

This feature is available in other markets like the US or the UK. This, in my honest opinion, diminishes the per-dollar value of a Kindle, but it may not be a deal breaker for you, dear reader.

Best Black Friday deal on a Kindle alternative

If I had to recommend an ereader that offers true value for money right now, I would pick the Kobo Libra Colour now discounted to AU$322.96 on Amazon (down from AU$379.95).

To compare like for like, I’ll pit the Colorsoft with the Libra Colour.

The latter gets you double the storage for under AU$14 more, plus the Bluetooth connectivity to listen to audiobooks. The only caveat here is that only audiobooks purchased from the Kobo Store (or downloaded as part of a Kobo Plus subscription) will play. I also think the ability to borrow from a library makes the Kobo an economical choice in the long run.

Both screens are the same 7-inch E Ink Kaleido 3 technology, but I will admit that the Colorsoft has been optimised better for more vivid hues. However, the Kobo’s asymmetrical design with page-turn buttons is more ergonomic than the candy-bar look of the Colorsoft.

I won’t even throw in the writing features of the Kobo here as you need to spend extra for the stylus, but it just adds to the ereader’s versatility.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I’m not trying to convince you that the Kobo is better than the Kindles, but it’s important to me that you have all the information you need before throwing down cash on a new ereader this summer.
